Don’t You Wish You Canned Those Tomatoes Last Summer?

Canned tomatoes.

A love – hate relationship.

Do we eat them or don’t we?

With all of talk of tomato can liners containing BPA (bisphenol-A) and it’s effects…what is a person supposed to do? Unless you are growing your own, pressure canning your own tomatoes or cooking with them fresh, what other choice do you have during those long winter months? Soup, chili, home made pizza sauce, lasagna, appetizers…those warm wintery meals are endless … and most all require tomatoes.

When I received a six-pack of Red Gold Tomato products to try, one of my first questions was, ” Are the tomato cans BPA free?” The answer I received was, ” In terms of BPA, Red Gold is continuing  to work with their can suppliers to find an alternative lining for their cans that will give consumers the same quality and shelf life they have come to expect.” Honestly, this was not the answer I was hoping for, however, I was happy to hear that this family-run, Indiana company is being proactive about this health concern. Recyclable glass jars would be an awesome alternative! (Just sayin’.)

With Super Bowl approaching, there are so many tomato based appetizers to choose from. From Taco dips to Sloppy Joe sliders, everyone should be getting their super doses of Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Lycopene from the included tomatoes. One of our favorite, super simple appetizers to prepare is Pizza Dip. Since my husband and I both lean towards lower carbohydrate diets, this dip cures our pizza cravings. Fill it up with veggie toppings and you also have yourself a quick, fun lunch!

Baked Pizza Dip
  • 8 oz. Cream Cheese, softened
  • 2 TB. Italian seasoning
  • 1 can/jar crushed tomatoes
  • Preferred pizza toppings: Diced onion, diced green pepper, cooked meats, mushrooms, shredded cheese, etc.
  1. Mix the cream cheese with the italian seasoning (and any other spices you like: crushed red pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, etc.)
  2. Spray a square baking dish with non-stick spray and spread the cream cheese mixture, covering the bottom of the pan.
  3. Layer with tomatoes, toppings and finalizing with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  4. Bake at 350 until melted and bubbly.
  5. Serve with crostini, bread sticks or crackers.

**FYI: Added explanation taken from the Red Gold Facebook page:

“Please note that BPA is not unique to the white can lining. All canned tomato products contain an enamel lining, whether it is white, clear or gold. Red Gold uses all three types. Often times, consumers confuse the clear enamel for no enamel at all. Canned tomato products (regardless of the brand) have a naturally high acid content, which require the use of a food-grade enamel can lining.According to our container supplier, the cans supplied to Red Gold have epoxy-based interior coatings for maximum performance and shelf life of your product. Epoxy coatings are manufactured from Bisphenol A, and only extremely low levels of BPA have been reported to migrate into some canned foods. All of our can manufacturers have assured us they are looking for alternative options. To ensure that we do not jeopardize shelf life stability and maintain the robust tomato flavor of our products, extensive testing must be done with any new can.”So, in other words, yes, they contain BPA. The only brand I’ve seen so far that doesn’t have BPA in their cans is Muir Glen.”

Oooooo. This sounds good! I love dips…especially warm, bubbly ones. May have to make this for Game Night in a couple of weeks. :)
