Remember that little post I did about quinoa? Well my friends, that recipe, along with votes from you, just won me a trip (for two) to the Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa’s “Taste of Pritikin” in Miami later this month! WAH-HOOEY!! While I’m there, I’ll be participating in a cook-off against Holly, from My Plant Based Family, who also won in the contest. I’m quite excited to say the least!
When I was younger, The Pritikin Diet was something Kirk Cameron adopted as his eating lifestyle and we all thought it was weird that he didn’t drink pop. THAT, was my extent of knowlege about Pritikin. Now? Not so weird; I don’t drink pop either. Since joining this competition, I have been reading up on what the diet consists of. Basically, it’s a very heart and waistline healthy eating plan that is quite strict on ingredients, but apparently not on flavor. The plan consists of three parts: Nutrition, Exercise and Mind-Body Health. All aspects of the plan are taught at the spa center, which I’m really looking forward to. As far as the eating plan goes, here’s what they suggest per day:
- 5 servings of unrefined, complex carbohydrates
- 5 vegetable servings
- 4 fruit servings
- 2 calcium rich foods
- No more than 1 serving of lean animal protein (white meat poultry, fish, seafood)
Doesn’t sound bad, right? There are some foods listed “in moderation” such as caffeinated beverages and egg whites. Also, there foods that are “not recommended”:
- added salt or high sodium foods
- added oils
- refined or concentrated sweeteners
- whole or low fat dairy
- salt substitutes
*Rubbing eyes* Really? So…no coffee or cream? No mai tai’s or martini’s or Cuban sandwiches or guacamole? We’re in MIAMI for cripe’s sake! I wonder if I can sneak a few packets of Starbucks Via into this “Hotel California?” JUST kidding…I’m totally here to learn something new and maybe even drop a few pounds while I’m at it. Actually, I’m looking forward to 4 days worth of meals prepared by a professional chef…along with staying in this relaxing location. Just look! (photos from the Pritikin Center)
Bienvenido a Miami!!
