#Organic Living – Homemade Microwave Popcorn

popcornMy family loves to snack on popcorn.

I love that they love to snack on popcorn.

However, I hate that our typical purchase of popcorn involves buying little plastic wrapped bags of chemical laden popcorn kernals. Funny how we can take something good and turn it into something awful for us.

We like to think of popcorn as a healthy food. Well, it is…when we don’t mix it with additives and artificial flavors. Let’s take a look at the nutrition/ingredient label of Orville Redenbacher’s Light Butter Microwave Popcorn: Orville Redenbacher’s Gourmet Popping Corn (Genetically Modified), Palm Oil (Deforestation & Habitat Destruction), Salt, Less Than 2% of Butter, Natural Flavor and Artificial Flavor (Problematic ingredient), Color Added, Freshness Preserved by TBHQ (additive & possible carcinogin) and Citric Acid. (Information provided by www.labelwatch.com – this is a good resource to help decode food ingredient labels. For even MORE eye opening facts, look up the flavored popcorns, like cheddar or ranch. Oy.)

Enough is enough. Why consume those nasty chemicals if you don’t have to? I mean, don’t we have enough things to worry about than to willingly eat foods laced with carcinogens? We may not have a choice but to breathe polluted air, though we do have a choice with it comes to what we buy and what we eat. Yes, we can pop popcorn on the stove. Yes, we could purchase a hot air popper. Though, all families are honestly looking for convenience. When I happened upon instructions on how to make microwave popcorn at home, I knew I had to try it. You know what? It worked perfectly and was delicious! With a Sharpie, I wrote the recipe right on the bag of popcorn and now anyone can make it at anytime…chemical free!

Author:

Ingredients
  • ⅓ c. Organic/non-gmo popcorn kernals (I have seen many recipes calling for ½ c. but my bag was popped full with just ⅓ c.)
  • 1 t. Non-gmo oil
  • ½ t. Sea Salt
  • *Here is the popcorn I currently use: Great Northern Popcorn Organic
Instructions
  1. Mix all three ingredients in a bowl. Pour into the bottom of a paper lunch sack. Fold the top over twice.
  2. Set upright in the microwave. Cook for 2½ - 3 minutes...or until you can count two seconds between pops. Enjoy!
