Help Stamp Out Hunger in 2014 #2014FoodDrive

Stamp Out Hunger

This Saturday, May 10, the National Association of Letter Carriers will be holding it’s 22nd Stamp Out Hunger food drive. In 2013, nationally, the food drives collected 74.4 million pounds of food, directly helping their local communities. “Too many people in this country are still going hungry every day,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “As letter carriers, we see this firsthand in just about every community we serve. But we aren’t the type of folks who simply move on to the next delivery and hope someone else will do something about it. Instead, for more than two decades now, our members have taken the lead in the effort to help solve this ongoing national problem.” During the holidays, food banks are typically flooded with non-perishable donations. However, by Spring, pantry stock dwindles to very low levels. “Helping local support organizations deal with this post-holiday lull in donations is the main reason we hold our national drive on the second Saturday in May,” Rolando said. With the school year ending, many children, who would otherwise get subsidized meals, go hungry over the summer.

How Can You Help Stamp Out Hunger?

So you do not forget, start today! Grab a bag (or several bags if you’re feeling generous) and start your collection of non-perishable food items. Set it by the door, next to your coat rack or set a reminder on your phone in order to you alert you of next Saturday’s collection. If you go grocery shopping this week, put down that case of soda and pick up $8 worth of food to donate. Or, maybe your cabinets are over-flowing with non-perishables that your family will never eat…put them in the bag! From my experience with our local pantry, some of the most requested items are: canned fruit, canned tomato products, canned vegetables, dry pasta, tuna, peanut butter, mac & cheese, ramen noodles, canned pasta products and fruit juice. Remember, many pantries will also accept paper, household and hygiene products. I understand these items do not help feed people, however, they can’t be bought with state assistance. Providing some of these necessities will help free up funds for other things, like food.

It doesn’t get much easier than this, friends:stamp out hunger mailbox

  1. Load up a bag full of food
  2. On Saturday, May 10th, set the bag next to your mailbox
  3. Your letter carrier will collect the donation and deliver it to your local food pantry

Never, especially in our country, should ANYone go hungry. It takes us all to help “Stamp Out Hunger.”
