Seeds Of Change Pledge To Plant Winner! {Update}

pledge to plant winners

In March, I attended the Chicago Good Food Festival, which is amongst my favorite food events of the year. At the fest you will find everything from farmers to whole food vendors to chef demos to workshops…there’s even a seed exchange (where I plan on spending more time next year.) Inside the vendor exhibit, I ran across Seeds Of Change who were asking people to make a pledge to plant, taking funny photos and giving out organic seeds from their vending machine. Of COURSE I made a pledge and sent my #PledgeToPlant tweets. SURPRISE! I was one of the 50 winners chosen from across the country! My prize package included:

·         A $250 donation to your local community or school garden that meets Seeds Of Change requirements

·         Seeds of Change® seeds and food product

·         A garden box from MiniFarmBox™.

·         A $100 Lowe’s® gift certificate to furnish home garden box

For someone who dabbles in gardening all season AND was running out of sunny planting space, this was an exciting prize package! Seeds Of Change was so very generous. They sent enough organic seeds to feed the entire country (well, almost.) Since I could never grow that many plants , I took packages to our NWI Food Swap and allowed other gardeners to take what they wanted. I’ll use what I can for starting next year’s plants, then take the remainders to the food fest seed exchange. Amazing how much fresh food can be grown just by sharing a little packet of seeds.

My farm box is holding out of control organic broccoli, an heirloom albino bell pepper and a few struggling organic green onions.

My Pledge To Plant Donation

Above the garden table, gift card and seeds, I was most excited about choosing a non-profit in which to give the $250 donation. I first started searching my immediate town for a school or youth club garden, community garden group or something of the like. Sadly, I came up with nothing. Luckily, during that time, I just happened to meet Farmer Damien from Native Roots Organic Farm in Westville, Indiana (about 30 minutes away.) Native Roots Farm is a small-scale nonprofit educational farm whose mission is to promote the development of a local sustainable food system through educational outreach, on-farm production, and hands-on learning opportunities. With the new farm only being established in late summer 2012, Damien was very excited and thankful to be chosen to receive the donation. Since he is not only a farmer but also an educator, Damien is thinking of using the money to put “worm factories” in the local elementary school classrooms. I’m so glad to be given the chance to help others reach their goals.

Is there anything better than receiving a gift that pays forward? Thanks again Seeds Of Change!!
