BBQ Time @Refinery29: Apple BBQ Sauce

Apple BBQ Sauce

Northern Indiana just had the coldest July on record. Seriously. When I woke up yesterday, it was 50 degrees. Right now? 54…AT THE END OF JULY. Within the next ten days, we “might” reach 82. What happened to the hot Midwestern summers that I lovingly remember? July and August used to be the hottest months of the year. Doesn’t seem that way anymore.

Despite the “chilly” days, blueberry season is here and the bushes are plentiful. This past week, I took my son and mother berry picking at a local blueberry farm. We all agreed it felt more like we should have been picking apples and pumpkins, however those items are still months away. With this year’s late May cold weather, apple trees (and fruit trees in general) have taken a real hit. But, with apples on the brain, I am reminded of this Apple BBQ Sauce recipe that was published on Refinery29. If you can get your hands on some apples this year, I highly suggest you put up some of this BBQ sauce…it is our favorite.

Apple BBQ Sauce Gone Blueberry

In fear of not finding bushels of apples this Fall, yesterday I jarred Blueberry BBQ Sauce. To my surprise, many of my Facebook friends have never heard of this idea. It’s delicious! Dark and thick, onion-y but tangy…I can’t wait to toss up some pulled pork or glaze a duck breast with this lovely sauce. If you would like to try this variation, use the same recipe as the Apple BBQ Sauce but instead of applesauce, substitute 12 c. of fresh blueberries. I made a half batch (6 c. blueberries) to start and ended up with five half pints of sauce (end amount will depend on how far the sauce is cooked down.) Get creative and give it a try! Now…if I could just get a hold of some local peaches…
